How to link Aadhaar card with bank account
Many banks have opened multiple channels (Like- SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank Accounts) to assist their customers in the process of linking their savings accounts with Aadhaar.
Here are some of the facilities offered by State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest bank:
SBI customers can access any of the bank’s ATMs to seed their Aadhaar with the bank account.
After swiping the ATM card and entering your PIN, Select the menu “Service – Registrations”. Select Aadhaar Registration (or inquiry as per your need). Select the account type.
The user is then asked to enter his or her Aadhaar number.
Confirm the same by re-entering it, according to the bank’s website.
SBI customers having subscribed to the bank’s internet banking facility can log into www.onlinesbi.com and access the link “Link your Aadhaar number” under “My Accounts”, appearing on the left panel of the screen, according to SBI.
Clicking on the link directs the user to a screen where he or she has to select the Account number, input the Aadhaar number and click on ‘Submit’.
The last two digits of registered mobile number (non-editable) will be displayed to the customer, according to SBI. The status of mapping will be advised to the customer’s registered mobile number, it noted.
For bank account-Aadhaar linking via an SMS service, SBI customers can send their Aadhaar UID from their mobile number registered with the bank in via SMS to 567676 in the following format: UID (space) Aadhaar number (space) Account number
In case the mobile number is not registered or in case the Aadhaar is already linked to Account, an SMS reply will be sent to you, according to the SBI website.

The Aadhaar number will be verified by Bank with UIDAI. In case it fails verification, an SMS will be sent to the customer to contact any SBI branch along with Aadhaar number or e-Aadhaar.
SBI customers can visit any branch of the bank with a copy of their Aadhaar number or e-Aadhaar. At the branch, a Letter of Request will be obtained from customer along with the photocopy of Aadhaar letter. After necessary verification, the Aadhaar linking will be done by the branch. An SMS will be sent to customer’s registered mobile number regarding the status of seeding, SBI adds.
Are banks ignoring extended deadline for Aadhaar linkage?
The last date for linking your bank account with your Aadhaar number has been extended to March, 31, 2018. You may dismiss this as old news.
But this still appears to be ‘breaking news’ for many banks of India and their branch managers who continue to bombard unwary customers about the need to have their accounts linked before December 31.
Speaking to a news channel, a senior citizen said, “This is nothing but contempt of court”, and urged the media to highlight the inconvenience caused to customers as well as the brazen disregard for the government’s public assurance on the subject.
Bank branch managers are apparently unwilling to take cognizance of news reports that had mentioned the government’s extension of the deadline. They say they have not yet received instructions on the subject from their ‘regional’ or zonal office. Clearly, it appears that in matters of rules and procedure, the writ of the government runs only after ‘instructions’ from the head office.
A senior SBI official said Aadhaar linkage is a “big” task as only those accounts which are operative have been linked and it’s a big task to link those accounts which are not being regularly operated. “So, deadlines will not work here as the customers don’t turn up,” he said.
Typically, in branches with 100,000 accounts, only 30 per cent of them will be operational. On average about 30 to 40 per cent of the operative accounts have been linked with Aadhaar so far, he added.
Almost all banks have now installed the software which pops up a message on Aadhaar linkage status the moment an account is opened for any transaction.

Strict Restriction Upon Use On Plastic Aadhar Card: UIDAI
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the agency that administers Aadhaar, has said that plastic Aadhaar cards are unusable, and prone to data theft.“There could be a possibility of sharing Aadhaar information details (personal sensitive demographic information) without informed consent with some devious elements,” the UIDAI said.
The topmost agency reiterated that the Aadhaar letter, its cutaway portion or downloaded versions of Aadhaar on ordinary paper or mAadhaar are “perfectly valid” and warned people against falling for the plastic printed Aadhaar card trap, as the vendors charge anywhere between Rs 50 to Rs 300 or more.
The agency has requested people to keep away from such elements or shops or vendors. Ajay Bhushan Pandey, chief executive officer, UIDAI, said, “So-called Aadhaar Smart card is totally unnecessary and a waste as during such printing its QR code often becomes dysfunctional. The Aadhaar card or the downloaded Aadhaar card printed on ordinary paper or mAadhaar is perfectly valid for all kind of uses.”
In case a person loses his Aadhaar card, he can download his Aadhaar card free of cost from https://eaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. The print out of the downloaded Aadhaar card, even in black and white form, is as valid as the original Aadhaar letter sent by UIDAI. There is absolutely no need to print it on plastic/PVC card or get it laminated.
UIDAI has cautioned unauthorized agencies not to collect Aadhaar information from the general public for printing of Aadhaar card as collecting such information or unauthorized printing of Aadhaar card or aiding such persons in any manner amounts to a criminal offence punishable with imprisonment under Indian Penal Code and Aadhaar Act, 2016.
